The rivers that flow into Chesapeake Bay act as sources of nutrients and soil, affecting the health of the downstream estuary. During the second half of the 19th century and the first half of the 20th century, the bay was crisscrossed by passenger steamboats and package lines that connected the various cities in the bay, in particular the Baltimore Steam Packet Company (Old Bay Line). Therefore, as the bay warms up, hypoxia may last longer in each summer season in the deep central channel of the bay.
